Glass Repair & Hardware: Everything You Need to Know
At Oasis Glass, we believe in transparency. With over 15 years of experience serving Mississauga and the GTA, we've gathered the most common questions our customers ask. Use this guide to save money and keep your home secure.
1. Emergency Board-Up & Security
A: Our 24/7 dispatch will send a technician immediately. We perform a "clean-and-secure" service: we remove all dangerous glass shards, measure the opening, and install a structural plywood board-up to secure your inventory and premises. We then provide an estimate for the permanent glass replacement the following morning.
A: In Canada’s climate and for safety, a board-up is essential. It protects your interior from weather damage, prevents further vandalism, and is often required by insurance companies to maintain your coverage after a break-in.
2. The Science of Window Hardware
A: This is usually caused by a stripped "worm gear" inside the operator. Over time, if the window hinges aren't lubricated, the crank has to work too hard and the metal teeth wear down. We replace the entire operator mechanism so your window opens effortlessly again.
A: Yes! We stock a massive inventory of legacy hardware, including Truth, Amesbury, and Roto parts. Even if your window brand is out of business, we can usually find a high-quality universal fit to get your windows locking and opening like new.
A: Often, the issue isn't the glass—it's the "snubbers" or the "multi-point locks." If the window is sagging even slightly, the locks won't pull the sash tight against the weatherstripping. We realign the window and replace worn hinges to create a vacuum seal.
3. Foggy Glass (The "Blown Seal" Problem)
A: Modern windows are "Insulated Glass Units" (IGUs) filled with Argon gas. When the seal breaks, the gas escapes and moist air gets in. This can't be "cleaned" out—the glass unit must be replaced. However, we replace *only* the glass, not the expensive vinyl or wood frame.
A: Yes. A "blown" seal means your window has lost its R-value (insulation power). It's like leaving a small crack open all year round. Replacing the glass unit can reduce your heating and cooling costs significantly.
4. Sliding Doors & Custom Screens
A: Rarely. 90% of the time, the "rollers" (the wheels at the bottom) have seized or flat-spotted. We lift the door, replace the rollers with heavy-duty stainless steel versions, and clean the track. It will slide with one finger when we're done!
A: Standard fiberglass mesh is easily torn by cats or dogs. Pet mesh is made of vinyl-coated polyester—it's 7x stronger and can withstand claws and teeth without tearing or sagging.
5. Commercial & Retail Services
A: That’s usually the "Door Closer"—the hydraulic box at the top of the door. If it leaks oil, it loses control. This is a major liability for businesses. We replace and calibrate closers to ensure they close safely and meet ADA accessibility standards.
